Acknowledging ballet’s contributions to art, media, and childhood in the United States helps one to contextualize its place in American society as an art form with a rich history that still has significant room to expand and grow. This paper presentation challenges the idea that ballet is a dying art form by deconstructing ballet’s influence on American society and culture

Factors

Choreographed by Aaliyah Hatcher

Music: I Walk With Ghost by Scott Buckley

Dancers: Alice-Michelle Kelsey-Toomer, Alyssa Boykin, Isis Council, Linda Seck, Sydney Good

3:30-4:00 PM Ath Forum Stage

“Factors” is created from research that illuminates that there are critical racial and diversity issues within dance and dance pedagogy.  The purpose of this creative work was to bring more attention to not only racism in the field, but also how dance stems from racism and how this fact impacts BIPOC students and how they view dance.  “Factors” captures the emotions and issues of BIPOC students through movement.
