What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is the ability to intentional and without judgment pay attention to the present moment, while acknowledging one’s feelings, thoughts and emotions within a relaxed and calm state. Mindfulness is a practice in which one becomes very aware and open to the present moment. One focuses on their present thoughts, feelings, and environment. In this state one can analyze their thoughts through a calm and non-biased perspective. One views their thoughts openly, and accepts the feelings that come with them. Mindfulness teaches one to live in the present instead of having one’s mind wander to the past or the future. Mindfulness also teaches that one’s thoughts and feelings are not permanent; it is this aspect that allows one to let go of repeating thoughts instead of allowing them to become all consuming.

Mindfulness and meditation go hand in hand. Most forms of meditations instruct you to focus on a neutral stimulant such as your breath, different parts of your body, or something in your environment. The goal is usually to reach a heightened sense of awareness in the present moment. However there are many different forms of meditation, try out more than one and see which works best for you.
