Goucher Receives $1.3M Grant to Support Humanities for All Times Project

Goucher has received a $1.3 million three-year grant from the Mellon Foundation to support a Humanities for All Times project, “Curiosity, Complexity and Social Justice: Invigorating the Essential Humanities for All.” By foregrounding social justice and humanistic methods in class, the grant will help establish an interdisciplinary humanities minor intended primarily for non-humanities majors. Through collaborative humanities research opportunities, faculty research, team teaching, professional development opportunities, and the development of an innovative course registration process designed to promote curiosity, the grant will impact the experience of all Goucher students.

Lewent Science Center Construction On Track to Open in 2027

Goucher is expanding academic opportunities for students with the development of the Lewent Science Center, a 44,000-square-foot learning center that will include state-of-the-art labs for student and faculty research. Construction has progressed significantly during the first quarter of 2026, with the project advancing from foundational work into full structural build-out and the early stages of interior construction. Slated to be completed in April 2027, the $50 million development is on time and on budget.

Goucher Board Extends President’s Contract

The Goucher College Board of Trustees has voted to extend President Devereaux’s contract to continue his leadership through June 2028. Devereaux has led the college since 2019, prioritizing a transformation of the college’s business model to address the numerous challenges posed by today’s higher education landscape. During his tenure, Devereaux has focused on forming strategic partnerships, securing the institution’s largest gifts, building a state-of-the-art science center, and achieving the college’s $100 million [UNDAUNTED] capital campaign goal, ultimately surpassing it by raising an unprecedented $172 million. Goucher’s endowment has also increased during Devereaux’s tenure from approximately $188 million to $300 million.

Faculty Year of Exploration Awards

Each year, Goucher College enables its faculty to be lifelong learners and continue their intellectual curiosities and passions through exploration of the sciences, technology, and their relationship to society by supporting a group of faculty to embark on a “year of exploration.” The award is designed to encourage faculty to pursue new intellectual experiences, explore novel areas of knowledge, and push disciplinary boundaries. This year’s recipients will explore true crime media related to official crime statistics, the sociotechnical frameworks for university data practices, and birthing experiences of Black mothers.

Goucher College Receives Grant to Address Systemic Social & Environmental Injustice

Goucher College has received a federal grant to support air-quality research and fill critical gaps in urban heat mapping. The congressionally directed spending will support the installation of weather stations and air quality sensors to produce data-driven climate science information. The research study and community outreach project will focus on Baltimore City, where public health problems have historically been linked to systemic social and environmental injustice.

Goucher College Partners for Degrees to Succeed Program

Goucher College and the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC) have announced a partnership for the Degrees to Succeed program, which will allow students to be dually admitted to CCBC and Goucher. This partnership will create a seamless pathway for community college students pursuing their four-year bachelor’s degrees. Goucher’s commitment to transfer students has been recognized by the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society’s Transfer Honor Roll for providing strong pathways that help transfer students achieve excellence and success.

Proactive Approach to Forging Strategic Partnerships

In a recent issue of Trusteeship magazine, President Devereaux shared insights into the collaborative, proactive work Goucher College’s Board of Trustees is doing to explore acquisitions and partnerships as one aspect of its future-forward sustainability and growth strategy. Goucher established the first university retirement community in the state and will be home to the corporate headquarters of one of the nation’s leaders in construction management, both of which offer unique revenue and educational opportunities.

‘The Chronicle’ Highlights Modern Approaches to Teaching Evaluation

Michael McCreary, an educational developer at Goucher’s Center for the Advancement of Scholarship and Teaching (CAST), was featured this month in The Chronicle of Higher Education’s teaching section, where he shared insight on teaching evaluations and how to implement modern approaches. CAST creates space for faculty to critically reflect on existing teaching practices while exploring new pedagogical approaches.

Hands-on Learning in the Classroom

One of the many benefits of a small liberal arts college is the hands-on learning and mentorship opportunities our students experience across the curriculum. We are shining a spotlight on just a few of the students who recently put their education into action through collaborative research and hands-on learning opportunities in the classroom. Interdisciplinary, experiential learning will be central to the new Lewent Science Center that will open next year.

Former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan joined Mileah Kromer, director of the Sarah T. Hughes Center for Politics at Goucher College, to support the student-centered programs of the Sarah T. Hughes Center for Politics and celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Goucher College Poll. The highly regarded poll measures the opinions of Maryland residents and voters on important policy, social, and economic issues.
