Kratz Summer Writing Fellows
Using inspiration from around the globe, 14 Goucher students will visit sites throughout Asia, Europe, and the United States for writing projects related to travel or research for a creative writing project or a writing-related internship this summer. Through the Kratz Center for Creative Writing at Goucher College’s summer writing fellowship, highlights of the student projects include visiting sites related to the Holocaust in Germany, conducting research in France, and visiting key art and architectural sites in Florence, Italy.
The Hallowed Ground Project and Land Acknowledgement
The Hallowed Ground Project, is our multi-year initiative founded and launched five years ago to better understand the legacies of slavery, colonialism, and racial injustices on the land that Goucher currently occupies. This ongoing, interdisciplinary project seeks to place the narratives of those who were previously excluded from the historical record to the forefront: indigenous peoples, enslaved and free African Americans, and other marginalized communities. Last month, Goucher established a land acknowledgment statement that was composed in dialogue with and in response to the words and perspectives of Indigenous peoples.
New tenured professors
Goucher College is proud to announce four Goucher professors have received tenure. Working in data science, neuroscience, and writing, faculty members Thomas Narock, Gillian Starkey, Bill U’Ren, and Charlee Sterling represent the college’s strategic investment in exceptional and student-centered faculty.

Anna Deavere Smith to deliver 2023 Commencement address
Playwright, actor, and educator Anna Deavere Smith will deliver the keynote address at Goucher College’s 2023 Commencement ceremony. In addition, Adrienne Arsht, business leader and philanthropist, will receive an honorary degree. The Arsht Presidential Diplomats, a distinguished group of student leaders, are supported by the Roxana Cannon Arsht ’35 Center for Ethics and Leadership at Goucher College, which is funded by a $2 million gift from Adrienne Arsht in honor of her mother.
Four Goucher faculty embark on ‘Year of Exploration’
Four Goucher College faculty members have been selected as the 2023 recipients of the Myra Berman Kurtz Fund for Faculty Research and Exploration of the Sciences (KRES Fund) Year of Exploration. The professors’ fields include political science, physics, literary studies, and business management.
Goucher College launches Campus Master Plan
Goucher College has launched its new Campus Master Plan (CMP), which envisions the future of the 287-acre campus over the next 15 years and proposes a more student-centered, accessible, and sustainable vision for Goucher’s future. Leading up to Goucher’s 150th anniversary in 2035, this plan considers the evolving needs of students, faculty, staff, and the surrounding community. The plan is the first comprehensive assessment of Goucher’s campus in almost 30 years.
Goucher College to receive $2 million for science and sustainability
Goucher College will receive $2 million from the federal government to support sciences and sustainability initiatives as part of this year’s omnibus appropriations bill recently signed into law. The college will receive $1.25 million to outfit life and health sciences teaching labs as well as $750,000 to install solar panels on campus.
Goucher College Poll celebrates 10th anniversary
Former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan joined Mileah Kromer, director of the Sarah T. Hughes Center for Politics at Goucher College, to support the student-centered programs of the Sarah T. Hughes Center for Politics and celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Goucher College Poll. The highly regarded poll measures the opinions of Maryland residents and voters on important policy, social, and economic issues.
Goucher Prison Education Partnership celebrates 10th anniversary
Founded in 2012, the Goucher Prison Education Partnership (GPEP) has provided an excellent college education to students incarcerated in Maryland so they can develop as scholars and leaders. Today, GPEP offers 30 courses to an average of 130 students annually. Classes are taught by Goucher faculty who hold GPEP students to the rigorous academic standards for which Goucher is known. More than 40% of GPEP students who completed their degree with Goucher graduated with honors.
