‘Symphony of the Soil’

Film director and producer Deborah Koons Garcia will explore the complexities of soil, one the most overlooked and misunderstood natural resources, on Wednesday, October 17, in Goucher College’s Kelley Lecture Hall. A screening of her 2012 documentary Symphony of the Soil will begin at 7:30 p.m., to be followed immediately by a presentation by Garcia.

There also will be a reception after the film screening and presentation, all of which are free and open to the public. For more information, contact the Goucher Box Office at 410-337-6333 or boxoffice@goucher.edu.

Symphony of the Soil is a feature-length film that examines humans’ relationship with soil; its use and misuse in agriculture, deforestation, and development; and the latest scientific research on soil’s key role in today’s most challenging environmental issues. Filmed on four continents and featuring some of the world’s most highly esteemed soil scientists, farmers, and activists, the film portrays soil as the foundation of life on earth.

The film inspires the understanding that treating the soil right could help solve such pressing problems as flooding, droughts, contaminated drinking water, cancer, developmental problems, antibiotic-resistant infections, climate change, and world hunger.

Garcia received her master of fine arts degree from San Francisco Art Institute. She has made fiction, educational, and documentary films, including The Future of Food, which was chosen by the Oscar screening committee as one of the best documentaries of 2004. For the last ten years, she has focused primarily on films about agriculture and the food system. She was married to the Grateful Dead’s Jerry Garcia from February 1994 until his death in 1995.

This event is sponsored by Bon Appétit Management Company, Goucher’s food services provider, and the Office of the President.
