This semester two Goucher classes participated in the Stevens Initiative’s Connected Classrooms program in which they conducted virtual exchanges with another class at a university in Morocco. Join us for this session to hear more about the collaborative work that grew out of these international virtual collaborations.<\/p>\n

LIT 285 Contemporary Literature: India, Africa, Australia.<\/strong><\/h5>\n

 <\/p>\n

The task was:<\/strong>\u00a0Five small groups made up of American and Moroccan students.\u00a0 Each group studied and presented on a short story set in Baltimore, and one set in Morocco.<\/p>\n

The challenges included:<\/strong> Technical issues, time differences (including a shift to daylight savings time), unfamiliarity with each other\u2019s cities, and with each other\u2019s norms for academic discussion, and different assumptions about handling questions of race and gender in fictional texts.<\/p>\n

\u00a0The outcomes were:<\/strong> Profound, with many instances of effective cross-cultural literary analysis.<\/p>\n

Join us for the world premiere of a video on the parallel issues and potential solutions of human rights abuses in Southern Spain greenhouses and the tomato harvest in Florida. Students from Goucher College\u2019s Complex Problem Exploration course Labor and Justice in the Fields and students under the direction of Dr. Chaimae Jalal of Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdellah University in Fes, Morocco collaborated on this project through the Stevens Initiative of the Aspen Institute. Join us to see the video and discuss this online international collaboration.<\/p>\n
