Lynn Satterfield \u201983\u2019s first contact with Goucher College was inauspicious. She received an unsolicited brochure for the\u00a0college at her home in North Carolina. It was headed for the trash when her father saw it.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy dad said \u2018What\u2019s that?\u2019\u201d she recalls. \u201cOh, some girls\u2019 school out of state, I think it\u2019s called Goo-Shay.\u201d<\/p>\n
Luckily, the new director of alumnae\/i\u00a0affairs says, her father knew more (including the pronunciation). He\u2019d seen the school win on the \u201cCollege Bowl\u201d quiz show and been impressed. On his insistence, they drove up to Baltimore.<\/p>\n
It was a successful visit\u2014Satterfield applied and attended. \u201cWe all came from different places, and we were all new, which was great,\u201d she says now. \u201cIt\u2019s nice to try something new and different, and it was the best thing I did.\u201d<\/p>\n
She came back a few years after graduating and worked for a time in the Admissions Office. (She conducted the first interview with a male student applying to the newly coed Goucher.)<\/p>\n
Since leaving Goucher, Satterfield has worked in development and alumni relations at a number of area schools, running events at the Roland Park Country School and St. Timothy\u2019s School in Stevenson, Maryland. Most recently she was the admissions and development coordinator at Chesapeake Montessori School in Annapolis.<\/p>\n
Now she\u2019s back, and she\u2019s been learning the ropes as she attends to the thousand details that make up Alumnae\/i Weekend.<\/p>\n
Satterfield has a history with the college, but Executive Director of Alumnae\/i Engagement Jennifer Pawlo-Johnstone is a new presence\u00a0on Goucher\u2019s campus, albeit one with a lot of experience in the field of alumni relations. She came to the area in 1996 to work at Towson University, and more recently has been working at Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, or Poly, as it\u2019s known locally.<\/p>\n
As Baltimoreans know, the answer to \u201cWhat school did you attend?\u201d usually refers to high schools, and Poly\u2014once the male counterpart to all-girl Western High School\u2014is a big deal in the city.<\/p>\n
\u201cI learned that really early on when I was doing admissions work at Towson,\u201d she says. \u201cIt was shocking to me how much affinity there was to high schools here. If I didn\u2019t know, I would have thought [Poly] was a private school.\u201d<\/p>\n
Poly\u2019s alums, like Goucher\u2019s, are fiercely loyal to their alma mater<\/em>, and Pawlo-Johnstone says she\u2019s been made to feel welcome in Goucher\u2019s tight-knit community.<\/p>\n \u201cWith any alumni work that I\u2019ve done,\u201d she says, \u201cthere\u2019s always that thread of remembering that the reason these graduates are here\u201410 years, 20 years after they graduate\u2014is that the school gave them something significant in their life. They want to stay connected and pass that down, to make sure the next generation of students has that experience. It speaks volumes about their experience, it speaks volumes about the school.\u201d<\/p>\n And Satterfield\u2019s experience here?
