{"id":7476,"date":"2026-01-22T14:59:22","date_gmt":"2026-01-22T19:59:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.goucher.edu\/magazine\/?p=7476"},"modified":"2026-03-02T13:25:18","modified_gmt":"2026-03-02T18:25:18","slug":"hands-on-learning-projects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.goucher.edu\/magazine\/hands-on-learning-projects\/","title":{"rendered":"Hands-on Learning Projects"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span data-contrast=\"none\">Learning With Lego\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The mere title of the class\u2014Quantum Chemistry &amp; Spectroscopy\u2014is enough to intimidate the average person. But for senior chemistry majors, it is an opportunity to dive into the subject and build something with their own hands.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Using Lego bricks, LED lights, circuits, and a battery ordered from Amazon, students in CHE 465\u2013Quantum Chemistry &amp; Spectroscopy were able to build an accurate colorimeter, a machine that can measure chemical concentrations in liquid samples, for less than $20, rather than the typical $1,000 cost for a professional model.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Associate Professor of Chemistry Wei Wei says the project is an excellent way for students to understand how the equipment works on a fundamental level.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cI am a strong believer in hands-on\u202flearning, and this is especially important when students are taking physical and instrument-related chemistry courses,\u201d says Wei.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Since students traditionally learn how the instrument works theoretically, Wei says that letting them build one is a more comprehensive project that blends interdisciplinary skills, including literature analysis, planning, chemistry, physics, basic electrical engineering, and data analysis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202f<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Alyssa Howell \u201925<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> agrees.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cIt helped us understand what is actually going on,\u201d says Howell. \u201cWe can hear him tell us in the lab, but now we are actually seeing it.\u201d <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">She says these hands-on projects directly prepare her for her career and that she has built connections between these types of projects and learning across her classes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Howell is a chemistry major and began working on a Summer Science Research Project in 2024 with Associate Professor of Chemistry Kevin Schultz. That work evolved into an independent research project and her senior capstone project. She plans to continue with graduate school after working in a lab at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Like Howell, <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Zoe Wright-Riley \u201926<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\"> was interested in this project because it allowed students to work through how a colorimeter works. \u201cPutting this together gave us deeper insight,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Wright-Riley works in the chemistry stock room to help set up labs for general chemistry and organic chemistry classes.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cI really love being in the lab and being hands-on,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Wright-Riley, who is also a member of the equestrian team, has conducted research with Schultz over the past two summers as part of the Summer Science Research Project, and this year is now working with Wei on a second research project focused on computational analysis of quantum dynamics. Wei created software to conduct the analysis needed for the project.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cGoucher is really good at providing every opportunity to be hands-on,\u201d says Wright-Riley, who is currently applying to graduate school.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">She hopes to provide opportunities like these to her future students, as she plans to teach chemistry at a small liberal arts school like Goucher, where she can conduct research and engage in student-centered learning projects.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Word Is Bond<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cYou learn so much from their stories,\u201d says <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Ronald Wolfe \u201926 <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">about his experience contributing <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/humanitieslab.goucher.edu\/oral-histories\/category\/black-alums\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Celebrating Black Alumnae\/i and Their Stories<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> collection in Goucher\u2019s library as part of the HIS 370\u2013Word Is Bond: Oral History as Preserving Culture class this fall. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">This is the second time that Associate Professor Kami Fletcher, who teaches African diasporic histories and coordinates the Africana Studies Program, has taught this course at Goucher. She says the students are \u201ccreating an oral history project using someone\u2019s lived experience.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Fletcher says they learn professionalism through the hands-on learning experience and take pride in the work they do. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:false,&quot;134233118&quot;:false,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:1,&quot;335551620&quot;:1,&quot;335559685&quot;:0,&quot;335559737&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\"> \u201cYou are responsible for that person\u2019s story being out there,\u201d she tells her students. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Like most of the students in the class, this was Wolfe\u2019s first oral history project. \u201cIt was overwhelming at first,\u201d he says. \u201cThen it becomes second nature\u2014you learn by doing.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">He was able to move past his nerves in part due to the preparation techniques Fletcher shared in class throughout the semester. academic skills, develop an academic plan, engage in the community, and venture out, all while participating in small, discussion-based classes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">This was all true for Mbonye. \u201cI really enjoyed the hands-on experience and appreciated the opportunity to see the process firsthand.\u201d<\/span><span
