At the same time, read more about the bands below, including links to Q&amp;As with <span style=\"color: #008085;\"><b>June Whelan \u201962<\/b><\/span>, <span style=\"color: #008085;\"><b>Michael Habif \u201910<\/b><\/span>, <span style=\"color: #008085;\"><b>Eliot Grasso \u201905<\/b><\/span>, and<span style=\"color: #008085;\"><b> Alice Davenport \u201969<\/b><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: Goucher Alumni Mixtape\" style=\"border-radius: 12px\" width=\"100%\" height=\"352\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/playlist\/5d6riU75LBzMeDW2kFCjPX?si=SJkKCe3XTnmwyhPWGHiR7w&amp;utm_source=oembed\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Lauren Lakis<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008085;\"><b>Lauren Lakis \u201907<\/b><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and her indie rock\/dreampop\/shoegaze songs have received a lot of positive press. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/earmilk.com\/2023\/10\/03\/lauren-lakis-is-the-reluctant-vampire-in-leave-your-window-open-video\/\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Earmilk<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">has said she has \u201cproven herself to be one of the most exciting rock artists with her way of writing raw narratives packaged in mesmerizing musical blends.\u201d She has put out an EP and three albums, including 2023\u2019s <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A Fiesta and a Hell<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/post-punk.com\/listen-to-dream-pop-artist-lauren-lakis-fiesta-and-a-hell\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Post-punk.com<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> wrote, \u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Lakis\u2019s work, characterized by its unfiltered, mysterious, and deeply impactful quality, represents a significant shift in the current shoegaze scene. Her latest release &#8230; delivers an emotionally charged punch, distinguished by its unadorned authenticity.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Horse Lords<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Horse Lords has also gotten a lot of critical attention. Formerly based in Baltimore, most of the members now live in Germany, including former Goucher faculty member <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span style=\"color: #008085;\">Andrew Bernstein \u201908, M.F.A. \u201915<\/span><\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. The group was once described by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/04\/28\/arts\/music\/horse-lords-interventions.html\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">The New York Times<\/span><\/i><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> as \u201can instrumental dance band\u2014guitar, bass, drums, alto saxophone\u2014with a lining of post-punk energy.\u201d More recently, British music magazine <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uncut.co.uk\/features\/were-new-here-horse-lords-143522\/\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Uncut<\/span><\/i><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> wrote that \u201cthe group draw from a deep well of minimalism, serial composition, free jazz and polyrhythmic folk music.\u201d A <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Pitchfork <\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">review shouts out Bernstein, who plays the saxophone: \u201cAndrew Bernstein\u2019s sax gets caught in a stuttering fit, breaking away from the rigid rhythmic grid. Soon he is full-on wailing, in free-jazz mode, conveying feral individual abandon instead of precise communitarian discipline.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Bernstein also has put out a number of solo records, including this year\u2019s <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Shadows and Windy Places<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Bernstein wrote of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/andrewbernstein.bandcamp.com\/album\/shadows-and-windy-places\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">the album<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, \u201cThe music was recorded as part of a daily practice. More than 50 musicians play the music of Russia, Ukraine, and Eastern Europe on traditional folk instruments like the domra, balalaika, and bayan. <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Washington Post <\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">reported back in 2010 that it was the largest balalaika orchestra outside of Russia. Whelan was playing the violin in a church orchestra when a friend suggested she learn the domra, an instrument similar to a mandolin. \u201cThe transition from playing a violin to a domra is relatively easy because both instruments are tuned the same,\u201d says Whelan. Read our <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.goucher.edu\/magazine\/qa-with-june-whelan-62\/\">Q&amp;A with June Whelan<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Manners Manners<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Manners Manners is a Baltimore-based band that makes queer noise pop, according to their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/mannersmannersmd\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Instagram<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, with <\/span><span style=\"color: #008085;\"><b>Jes Welter \u201999<\/b><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> on bass and <span style=\"color: #008085;\"><strong>Haley Sweet \u201908<\/strong> <\/span>singing and playing the drums. The group released the EP <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">First in Line<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in 2018 and the album <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I Held Their Eyes, I Kissed Them All<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in 2024, which the music site <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thesesubtlesounds.com\/interview-manners-manners\/\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">These Subtle Sounds<\/span><\/i><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> called in a Q&amp;A with the band \u201ca great album\u201d that demands your attention: \u201cIt\u2019s not background music.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5748\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5748\" style=\"width: 800px\" href=\"https:\/\/showspace.tumblr.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span class=\"TextRun Underlined SCXW192832926 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW192832926 BCX0\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"Hyperlink\">Baltimore Showplace<\/span><\/span><\/a><span class=\"TextRun SCXW192832926 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW192832926 BCX0\">heavy\/experimental music festival <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW192832926 BCX0\">called<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW192832926 BCX0\"> \u201c<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW192832926 BCX0\">Subscape<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW192832926 BCX0\">\u201d <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW192832926 BCX0\">that will <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW192832926 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW192832926 BCX0\">take place this October in <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW192832926 BCX0\">the city<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW192832926 BCX0\">. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW192832926 BCX0\">He is also the <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW192832926 BCX0\">drummer <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW192832926 BCX0\">in the hardcore <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW192832926 BCX0\">punk <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW192832926 BCX0\">band Tripper. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW192832926 BCX0\">O<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW192832926 BCX0\">f<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW192832926 BCX0\"> hardcore punk, Habif says, \u201cAnyone who listens to the genre knows that it <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW192832926 BCX0\">is<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW192832926 BCX0\"> a wide spectrum of sounds. <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW192832926 BCX0\">I just think our songs<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW192832926 BCX0\"> are <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW192832926 BCX0\">kind of weird<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW192832926 BCX0\"> and take from a lot of stuff outside of hardcore.\u201d <\/span><\/span><a class=\"Hyperlink SCXW192832926 BCX0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.saladdaysmag.com\/baltimore-hardcore-punk-band-tripper-rip-on-new-single-cycles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span class=\"TextRun Underlined SCXW192832926 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW192832926 BCX0\" data-ccp-charstyle=\"Hyperlink\">Salad Days Magazine<\/span><\/span><\/a><span class=\"TextRun SCXW192832926 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW192832926 BCX0\"> described their music as \u201c[pushing] forth hardcore with Michael Habif<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW192832926 BCX0\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Mothpuppy<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008085;\"><b>Morgan Murphy \u201918<\/b><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> formed the indie rock band Mothpuppy at Goucher, and it is still going strong. Of the 2022 album, <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Limb from Limb<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/ourculturemag.com\/2022\/02\/01\/artist-spotlight-mothpuppy\/\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Our Culture Magazine<\/span><\/i><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> wrote that it was a \u201ccaptivating album\u201d that contained \u201cunbridled yearning.\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sadcact.us\/home\/posts\/28995-mothpuppy-as-it-goes-down-out-november-15th-two-singles-out-today\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Sad Cactus Records<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, in announcing the release of the band\u2019s 2024 EP, wrote, \u201c<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">As It Goes Down<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\"> is a remarkable expansion of the band\u2019s oeuvre, and fleshes out the transition of the band from being a project of lead songwriter Morgan Murphy to being a full band collaboration. Their first release as a five piece, and first since 2022\u2019s phenomenal <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Limb from Limb<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">, these new songs reveal a fresh, vital band that writes rollicking, engaging rock and roll.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Little Gunpowder<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In 2017, <\/span><span style=\"color: #008085;\"><b>Katie Calabrese \u201919<\/b><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> started Little Gunpowder while at Goucher with several of her fellow students. The group has released two albums, including Cascade Mountain Aire, which came out in 2023. They also <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">composed and performed music for a production of the <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Legend of Sleepy Hollow <\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ballet. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishmusicmagazine.com\/releases\/releases-annual-2024\/\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Irish Music Magazine<\/span><\/i><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> wrote, \u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Impressive, infectious music on every track from three maste<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">rs of the tradition. Their blazing music will warm the heart of any trad gathering.\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishecho.com\/2015\/12\/dreos-blaze-a-trail\/\"><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Irish Echo<\/span><\/i><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> said Grasso \u201cis an academically trained ethnomusciologist with an impressive performing resum\u00e9. &#8230; He\u2019s performed for President Clinton, was a featured artist on <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Prairie Home Companion<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and performed and taught for Armagh\u2019s William Kennedy International Piping Festival. His recording \u2018Up Against the Flatirons\u2019 was the first in Na P\u00edobair\u00ed Uilleann\u2019s <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Ace and Deuce of Piping<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> recording series of master pipers.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.goucher.edu\/magazine\/qa-with-eliot-grasso-05\/\">Read our Q&amp;A with Eliot Grasso<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Baltimore Rock Opera Society (BROS)<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">While they aren&#8217;t a musical act like the others, we&#8217;d be remiss not to mention the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baltimorerockopera.org\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Baltimore Rock Opera Society<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, or BROS. BROS was formed in 2007 by a group of friends, including Goucher grads <\/span><span style=\"color: #008085;\"><b>Eli Breitburg-Smith \u201908<\/b><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><span style=\"color: #008085;\"><b>Aran Keating \u201905<\/b><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><span style=\"color: #008085;\"><b>Dylan Koehler \u201908<\/b><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and <\/span><span style=\"color: #008085;\"><b>Jared Margulies \u201908<\/b><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Other Goucher grads have also been involved on stage and behind the scenes.
