B<\/span>eing a lifelong learner has helped Melissa R. Klapper \u201995<\/strong><\/span> achieve remarkable feats, from publishing scholarly works to gracing the stage of Jeopardy!<\/em><\/p>\n

Klapper\u2019s love of learning was established in her youth. Her mother, a teacher, and her father, a doctor, imbued her with the importance of education. Klapper began attending Goucher College with the goal of becoming a history teacher. There, \u201cmy history and English professors encouraged me to consider an academic career in which I could combine teaching, research, and writing,\u201d Klapper says. With those three tenets in mind, Klapper graduated in 1995 and pursued a career in education.<\/p>\n

When she\u2019s not teaching our future leaders, Klapper delves into her research on American Jewish women\u2019s history and the history of American childhood. Her four published books to date focus on restoration; she reshapes conventional narratives to incorporate frequently overlooked stories of women\u2019s and gender history. Klapper is \u201ccommitted to recovering the voices of so-called \u2018ordinary\u2019 women,\u201d she says. \u201cTheir stories and experiences are what make up history, not just the lives of prominent people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her thirst for knowledge aided in her journey with Jeopardy!<\/em>, which also began in her youth. \u201cI grew up with Jeopardy!<\/em> My family watched the show, we had the board game, and I\u2014unsuccessfully\u2014tried out for the Teen Tournament when I was in high school,\u201d Klapper admits. Still, she never lost her interest in the show, and her determination later proved fruitful. \u201cPassing all the tests and making it onto the show was a lifetime dream come true,\u201d Klapper states.<\/p>\n

Then came the preparation. \u201cI studied some of my weaker areas, like science, and I tried hard to improve my buzzer speed,\u201d though buzzer timing unexpectedly became one of her biggest challenges. \u201cHome viewers don\u2019t always realize that the game is physical as well as intellectual,\u201d Klapper reveals.<\/p>\n

After training, Klapper appeared on Jeopardy!<\/em> on March 20, 2023. She won\u2014and became a season 39 three-time champion. \u201cDoing well and winning games was even better than I could have imagined,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

Klapper was invited back onto Jeopardy!<\/em> for their Tournament of Champions. \u201cThat was a surprise and a thrill,\u201d Klapper says. \u201cIt was an honor to be part of the group of contestants, all of whom are wonderful, supportive people.\u201d Although she didn\u2019t win the Tournament of Champions, appearing on Jeopardy!<\/em>\u2014not once, but twice!\u2014was the thrill of a lifetime.<\/p>\n
