{"id":4065,"date":"2022-01-28T15:22:40","date_gmt":"2022-01-28T20:22:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.goucher.edu\/magazine\/?p=4065"},"modified":"2025-07-24T16:20:42","modified_gmt":"2025-07-24T20:20:42","slug":"alicia-carter-84","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.goucher.edu\/magazine\/alicia-carter-84\/","title":{"rendered":"Alicia Carter \u201984"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #008085\"><strong><span class=\"dropcapT\">A<\/span>licia Carter<\/strong><\/span> made an impression on everyone who met her. \u201cWhat I remember most about Alicia is her big smile,\u201d says<span style=\"color: #008085\"> <strong>Gwen McDonnell Lopez \u201984<\/strong><\/span>, who lived with <span style=\"color: #008085\"><strong>Erin O\u2019Brien Anderson \u201984<\/strong><\/span> across the hall from Carter in Connor House of Stimson Hall. \u201cShe was always a happy person\u2014always\u2014and upbeat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was always happy,\u201d echoes <span style=\"color: #008085\"><strong>Zari Malsawma \u201983<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Carter came to Goucher in 1980 from Charlottesville, VA, majoring in economics. Naturally quiet, she blossomed around those with whom she was close, known for singing into her hairbrush \u201cmicrophone,\u201d sharing the joy that burst out of her. \u201cAlicia was one of our very first friends,\u201d says Anderson. \u201cShe was very generous. She was a kind soul.\u201d Carter had an affinity for plants and nature. She was known for her skill in reviving failing houseplants in the dorm. \u201cThat\u2019s where the garden came from,\u201d says Lopez, of the garden on campus dedicated to Carter\u2019s honor in 2014. \u201cShe loved plants, flowers, and seeing things growing and flourishing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Goucher alumnae\/i have always supported each other through the triumphs and tragedies of life. This was tested in the summer of 1983, when Carter had her life tragically cut short. For 38 years, the murder remained unsolved. Recently, <em>ProPublica <\/em>published a series of articles describing how the case was finally resolved. It\u2019s a story of dogged journalism, a dedicated physician who refused to let evidence from assaults disappear, and a brave survivor who came forward and would not let a serial rapist remain free. The confession of the man, already behind bars for life, has brought bittersweet closure to Carter\u2019s family and friends. He also confessed to assaults of two other Goucher students in this timeframe.<\/p>\n<p>Carter had a deep faith. She was preparing to take over the leadership of the Goucher Christian Fellowship in the fall of 1983 and was preparing for a missionary trip to Africa after graduation. \u201cWe met through the [Fellowship],\u201d says Malsawma. \u201cWe didn\u2019t have anything in common except our sisterhood in Christ. And yet the bond was so strong.\u201d Malsawma remembers a night she got lost in Towson with Carter a few months before Carter\u2019s death. She struggled to understand why God protected Carter then but not the night she died.<\/p>\n<p>Two decades later, Malsawma was in a Bible study group focused on the Gospel of John. \u201cJames was martyred soon after Jesus died and rose again,\u201d says Malsawma. \u201cBut his brother, John, lived to old age. It was a revelation to me that God had different plans and purposes for the brothers.\u201d The epiphany made her think back to Alicia. \u201cLife is so brief for some, prolonged for others. But long- or short-lived, God has a unique purpose for each of us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Due to the developments in Carter\u2019s case and others, Anderson, Lopez, Malsawma, and <span style=\"color: #008085\"><strong>Kim Van Newkirk Shaffir \u201983<\/strong><\/span> are part of a group of alumnae working with Goucher\u2019s chaplain on an event at Alumnae\/i Weekend this April that will recognize Carter\u2019s legacy, honor survivors, and celebrate the strength of their Goucher ties.<\/p>\n<p>Carter was memorialized in August 1983 by her family and friends at her family church in the foothills of the Shenandoah Valley and buried peacefully alongside many family ancestors. She will be remembered, said her pastor, as a life that lived by the Golden Rule. \u201cShe\u2019s within nature,\u201d Anderson says, \u201cand overlooking beauty, the outdoors, and plant life.\u201d The Class of 1984 has established a scholarship at Goucher in Carter\u2019s memory.
