{"id":2787,"date":"2019-04-01T10:35:13","date_gmt":"2019-04-01T14:35:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.goucher.edu\/magazine\/?p=2787"},"modified":"2025-07-25T15:53:39","modified_gmt":"2025-07-25T19:53:39","slug":"goucher-students-enter-a-different-kind-of-sports-battle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.goucher.edu\/magazine\/goucher-students-enter-a-different-kind-of-sports-battle\/","title":{"rendered":"Goucher Students Enter a Different Kind of Sports Battle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the corner of the library, just past the front desk, the enemy creeps around a dark bend as Thresh, the chain warden, ensnares him with a hook and harvests the enemy soul. Thresh has less than half a second to wrap his chain around a second enemy attempting to leap over him to safety. He does so, just barely.<\/p>\n<p>Conversation in the library buzzes. Students continue to work on computers. No one seems to notice the 10 champions battling minions and dragons through enemy territory to conquer the nexus, the power source in <em>League of Legends (LoL)<\/em>. The game is played on a computer between two teams of five that fight each other to reach the other team\u2019s nexus, located on either side of the jungle-filled battlefield.<\/p>\n<p>In the spring semester, Goucher created an esports team to compete in the Division III Landmark Conference, which is the first time esports has been part of the Landmark Conference. Juniata College, Elizabethtown College, Susquehanna University, Drew University, and Catholic University of America also brought esports teams into the conference. Some esports programs across the country have varsity teams, coaches, scholarships, and arenas for people to watch gamers play\u2014just like basketball or football.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2808\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2808\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2808 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.goucher.edu\/magazine\/files\/2019\/04\/ESports-web-DSC00490.jpg\" alt=\"Goucher student plays League of Legends\" width=\"1200\" height=\"798\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.goucher.edu\/magazine\/files\/2019\/04\/ESports-web-DSC00490.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/blogs.goucher.edu\/magazine\/files\/2019\/04\/ESports-web-DSC00490-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.goucher.edu\/magazine\/files\/2019\/04\/ESports-web-DSC00490-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.goucher.edu\/magazine\/files\/2019\/04\/ESports-web-DSC00490-1024x681.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2808\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">League of Legends is a strategy-based game that requires clear and quick communication between team members.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Goucher\u2019s team, like most of the teams in the Landmark Conference, is considered a club sport and is based out of the Wellness Center, where Jen Macko, campus recreation coordinator, and Jean Perez, director of student wellness, helped make esports a reality. <strong><span style=\"color: #f26522\">Zack Palmer \u201921<\/span><\/strong>, co-founder of the <em>League of Legends<\/em> club at Goucher, considers this an accomplishment. What started as Palmer\u2019s hunt for a set of computers resulted in esports and a dedicated <em>LoL<\/em> room in the library with 10 computers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cZack has been the spine, he\u2019s been the entire skeletal structure, of our club,\u201d says <strong><span style=\"color: #f26522\">Crockett Macnie \u201921<\/span><\/strong>. \u201cHe\u2019s bent over backward for the past two years trying to bring esports to Goucher.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Goucher has <em>LoL<\/em> and not some of the other equally popular video games because the <em>LoL<\/em> club members organized themselves and petitioned for their funds, Macko says. \u201cThat\u2019s one of the tenets of a liberal arts institution, giving students the power to be their own proponent,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n<p>Palmer and his teammates hope esports will expand to include other games and attract more people. The gaming industry, as he points out, is much bigger than <em>LoL<\/em>. The worldwide audience for esports in 2018 was 395 million people, with 173 million of those identifying as frequent viewers\/enthusiasts, according to Statista, a portal for market data and research. The market matches the popularity, with Statista reporting esports at a value of nearly $865 million for 2018, an amount expected to reach $1.79 billion by 2022.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2809\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2809\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2809 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.goucher.edu\/magazine\/files\/2019\/04\/ESports-web-DSC00433_edit.jpg\" alt=\"League of Legends gameroom\" width=\"1200\" height=\"682\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.goucher.edu\/magazine\/files\/2019\/04\/ESports-web-DSC00433_edit.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/blogs.goucher.edu\/magazine\/files\/2019\/04\/ESports-web-DSC00433_edit-300x171.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.goucher.edu\/magazine\/files\/2019\/04\/ESports-web-DSC00433_edit-768x436.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.goucher.edu\/magazine\/files\/2019\/04\/ESports-web-DSC00433_edit-1024x582.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2809\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Now that esports is part of the Landmark Conference, Goucher dedicated a room in the library\u2014complete with computers and a white noise machine\u2014for the <em>League of Legends<\/em> team to practice.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cEsports started about a decade ago and just took off, and they\u2019re here to stay,\u201d Macko says. \u201cI can tell you most other university rec programs are taking it and running. \u2026 The viewership is what keeps it going. It\u2019s not just for the athletes; it\u2019s for the people watching it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gamers livestream their performance on platforms such as Twitch and also play live in arenas around the world that are designed to hold thousands of spectators.<\/p>\n<p>During the 2018 final round of the League of Legends World Championship, there were over 200 million viewers (on multiple platforms) from around the world and a prize pool more than $2 million, according to Esports Charts, which tracks gaming trends.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think people understand how much this game has grown. The World Championship is our Super Bowl,\u201d says <strong><span style=\"color: #f26522\">Tasos Tagtalenidis \u201922<\/span><\/strong>. In 2018, 103 million people watched the Super Bowl on TV and streaming services, and even at its largest viewership of 114 million in 2015, the numbers don\u2019t compare.<\/p>\n<p><em>LoL<\/em> is in its ninth season, and creator Riot Games keeps the game fresh and challenging by making small tweaks to the game every few weeks. A small change to a character\u2019s abilities can have huge implications to the game, Macnie says. \u201c<em>League of Legends<\/em> rewards you for playing for a while because you learn more about the characters. There\u2019s always another deeper level of intricacy,\u201d he says. \u201cYou can play just for fun or you can play to win, and there are 80 ways to do that. The game is always changing and it\u2019s the reason it\u2019s still so popular.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2810\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2810\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2810 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.goucher.edu\/magazine\/files\/2019\/04\/ESports-web-DSC00523_edit.jpg\" alt=\"League of Legends Goucher players\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.goucher.edu\/magazine\/files\/2019\/04\/ESports-web-DSC00523_edit.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/blogs.goucher.edu\/magazine\/files\/2019\/04\/ESports-web-DSC00523_edit-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.goucher.edu\/magazine\/files\/2019\/04\/ESports-web-DSC00523_edit-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.goucher.edu\/magazine\/files\/2019\/04\/ESports-web-DSC00523_edit-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2810\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong><span style=\"color: #f26522\">Adam Jones \u201920<\/span><\/strong>, Tasos Tagtalenidis, and League of Legends club founder Zack Palmer have become a close group of friends.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>LoL<\/em> requires strategy, split-second decision-making, fast reflexes, and an ability to foresee your enemy\u2019s, and your teammates\u2019, next moves, Tagtalenidis says. Goucher\u2019s team is struggling to work together as a team, he adds, because communicating their precise locations while describing their actions in less than a second is difficult to do. Playing together more frequently will help them innately know each other\u2019s playing style and make them a formidable competitor.<\/p>\n<p>This past season, Goucher won one out of five games, but it\u2019s not necessarily about whose players are better, Palmer says, but who can work best as a team.<\/p>\n<p>Building team bonds is essential for any sport, Macko says, not just for the game but also for the support and friendship that comes with it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really love it,\u201d Palmer says. \u201cI love being a part of this team. I\u2019m not nearly as skilled as some of these guys, but seeing what everyone brings to the table, and how we can all have fun even though we don\u2019t excel at the same things, is not something you
