{"id":2215,"date":"2019-01-03T09:34:17","date_gmt":"2019-01-03T14:34:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.goucher.edu\/magazine\/?p=2215"},"modified":"2025-07-26T14:31:38","modified_gmt":"2025-07-26T18:31:38","slug":"a-good-stretch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.goucher.edu\/magazine\/a-good-stretch\/","title":{"rendered":"A Good Stretch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"dropcapO\">I<\/span>t is 9 a.m. the day before Thanksgiving, and <span style=\"color: #004c97\"><strong>Robert Bull \u201993<\/strong><\/span> is already cooking what will be a southern homemade feast with lots of butter\u2014for 50 people. It\u2019s something he and his wife do every year, cook for dozens of people.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s Robert Bull. He thrives when he gives, and when he can get others to do so, too. It\u2019s a skill dating to his Goucher days as a theatre major; he realized there was a whole back of house that was just as important. He focused his study on arts administration, and, after graduating, went into fundraising. After working at a liberal arts college and a national consulting firm, Bull helped build the Compass Group, a fundraising company to which he was named president in January 2019.<\/p>\n<p>He spends a great deal of time volunteering those fundraising skills, particularly at Goucher. Because he studied arts administration, \u201cI was one of those younger types who knew what a board was. I understood volunteer leadership,\u201d he said. Right after graduation, he joined the Alumnae and Alumni of Goucher College, and from there he joined the Board of Trustees. Today, Bull, along with <span style=\"color: #004c97\"><strong>Margo Winslow \u201969<\/strong><\/span>, is co-chair of Goucher\u2019s capital campaign, <strong>[UN<\/strong>DAUNTED<strong>]<\/strong>. The campaign was announced last March and, as of writing, the college was nearly halfway to its goal of $100 million.<\/p>\n<p>Doesn\u2019t he ever get tired of fundraising after doing it at work all day and then doing it some more for Goucher? Bull laughs. \u201cOh, my goodness, it\u2019s more fun!\u201d he said. He gets to step away from the consulting and teaching aspects of his work and do the fundraising itself. \u201cThat\u2019s like icing on the cake,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Bull demonstrates his leadership through volunteering and his own giving. He donates mostly to the Greater Goucher Fund. \u201cHaving been on the board for a number of years,\u201d Bull said, \u201cI understand the importance of unrestricted giving, just because of the flexibility that it gives to the institution so it can direct it to the greatest need.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Because of the momentous campaign, Bull has decided to push himself a little further through a stretch gift. \u201cWhen we\u2019re asking someone to stretch,\u201d he explained, \u201cI would want them to consider something in the neighborhood of 10 times what they would typically give on an annual basis. It\u2019s reaching that next level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But that next level should not be painful. \u201cThere\u2019s a saying, don\u2019t stretch until it hurts, but stretch until it feels good.\u201d He wants fellow alumnae\/i to feel proud about committing to Goucher. He remembers his pride at his stretches, when he went from giving three figures to four to five. For this campaign, Bull stretched to make a six-figure gift.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the first time for me,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m honored to do it, and it feels
