C<\/span>ollege teaches us to think, so we can learn and find answers for ourselves.\u00a0There are\u00a0aspects of the\u00a0professional world, however, that\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0be taught\u00a0inside the classroom, like how to handle\u00a0tricky\u00a0clients or when to speak up in meetings. Enter the summer internship, a time-honored way to get\u00a0experience and\u00a0a foot in the door of any industry.<\/p>\n

The recent overhaul of\u00a0the Career Education Office\u00a0saw the introduction of the Goucher Advantage, which makes career education a central element of each student\u2019s experience through the\u00a0curriculum, mentoring, and professional experience.\u00a0One highlight\u00a0of the initiative\u00a0is\u00a0the Goucher Intern Fellowship, or GIF, which awards $2,000 stipends to\u00a0qualifying\u00a0students with summer internships. GIFs\u00a0subsidize the\u00a0opportunity, freeing students\u00a0from\u00a0financial obstacles that might otherwise prevent them from participating, like the need to take a\u00a0second job\u00a0or\u00a0the cost of\u00a0transportation.<\/p>\n

And now, more Goucher students than ever are\u00a0landing\u00a0internships, driven by a desire for\u00a0specialized career\u00a0experiences they\u00a0might not\u00a0encounter\u00a0in a more typical summer job scooping ice cream.\u00a0Here\u00a0are a few of their stories.<\/p>\n

The job description from the Smithsonian Libraries\u00a0Research Annex\u00a0was too good to ignore,\u00a0Olivia Robertson \u201920<\/b>\u00a0says.\u00a0\u201cI remember a line, like, \u2018Must love the smell of books, sitting, and taking quiet notes in a room.\u2019 I thought, that\u2019s great, I can do that.\u201d She is a gift-in-hand intern there, taking the first steps to catalog donations to the library. Currently, she\u2019s working through a collection from the Culinary Historians of Washington. A double major in art history and French, with a minor in professional writing, Robertson wanted an internship that would help her\u00a0start her career.<\/p>\n

She also wanted to have fun. \u201cIt\u2019s something about working with the materials,\u201d she says. \u201cYou get to see a lot of weird stuff, notes from the original owners, things like that. It\u2019s pretty fun to interact with.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maddie Hardy \u201918<\/b>\u00a0just graduated with\u00a0a double major in communication and media studies and environmental studies. She already has experience working in film, having co-directed a documentary, while still in school, about food apartheid in Baltimore, called\u00a0Baltimore\u2019s Strange Fruit<\/i>. She taught herself how to film and edit, but other facets of the process\u00a0remained opaque.<\/p>\n

Through an internship with the Television Academy Foundation, Hardy is working for Tremendous Entertainment, a production company in North Hollywood specializing in TV docuseries. She is a development intern, preparing shows to be pitched to networks.\u00a0That can mean writing one-sheets, which summarize the show, or finding the right B-list celebrity to host a series.\u00a0\u201cI\u2019m fairly self-taught,\u201d she says. \u201cBut you can\u2019t teach yourself development. You have to see it go down.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brandon Cohen \u201920<\/b>\u00a0relates. The business management and economics double major is interning with Morgan Stanley\u00a0in the Los Angeles metro area. His boss is teaching him about wealth management and mutual funds, but he\u2019s also\u00a0watching\u00a0the unspoken\u00a0cues. \u201cI\u2019ve been learning a lot about\u00a0how\u00a0people interact, face-to-face and over the phone, and the dynamic of the corporate world. That will be very valuable for me going into the future,\u201d Cohen says.<\/p>\n

Some students are strengthening skills they didn\u2019t even expect to use. Ashlyn Appelbaum \u201919<\/b> majors in psychology and Spanish, and she is spending her summer interning with the Make-A-Wish Foundation\u2019s Hudson Valley chapter. As a program services intern, she works on the logistics of making the wishes come true. Being one of two Spanish speakers in the office means Appelbaum gets plenty of practice. \u201cI\u2019ve been writing letters in Spanish,\u201d she says, \u201cand my skills have actually improved.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0The internship solidified her desire for a profession that uses both her psychology knowledge and Spanish abilities, so she would love to stay and grow her career at the Make-A-Wish Foundation.<\/p>\n

The internships run until the end of summer, but the interns are looking\u00a0ahead\u2014to school, to new jobs.\u00a0They\u2019re also eager to warn other students that finding a good internship takes time, and\u00a0persistence\u00a0is key.\u00a0Appelbaum\u00a0first contacted Make-A-Wish two\u00a0years ago, after her own cousin had a wish fulfilled. The organization didn\u2019t have an opening at the time, but encouraged her to keep trying. She was surprised when she finally got a call from the group this past April.<\/p>\n

Hardy says to keep an open mind.\u00a0She thought an internship with a production company was a longshot, and it\u00a0ended up panning out.\u00a0\u201cIt was very cool. Apply for everything. You never know when it could work out.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
