{"id":1873,"date":"2018-06-08T11:14:00","date_gmt":"2018-06-08T15:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.goucher.edu\/magazine\/?p=1873"},"modified":"2025-07-26T16:47:23","modified_gmt":"2025-07-26T20:47:23","slug":"gail-standish-55-kat-elicker-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.goucher.edu\/magazine\/gail-standish-55-kat-elicker-19\/","title":{"rendered":"Gail Standish &#8217;55 &amp; Kat Elicker &#8217;19"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Kat Elicker \u201919<\/strong> has long been steeped in Goucher history. Her mother, <strong>Jillian Storms \u201980, P \u201919, <\/strong>is an alumna, and Elicker grew up coming to art gallery openings on campus. But when it came time to apply to college, Elicker didn\u2019t see herself at Goucher, as she wanted to create her own path. Her mom convinced her to look, knowing Elicker wanted to be in a small liberal arts environment. After narrowing down her choices, she interviewed with Corky Surbeck, the director of Admissions. \u201cThere was this moment,\u201d Elicker says, \u201cwhen I realized that Goucher just cared a lot more about me\u201d than the other schools.<\/p>\n<p>Goucher moments are special to Elicker, who loved hearing her mother\u2019s stories growing up. So when the environmental studies major wanted to make some extra money for her study abroad program in New Zealand, she got a job as a caller for the Alumnae\/i House\u2019s Phone-a-thon.<\/p>\n<p>She was intimidated by the thought of having to ask alumnae\/i for donations, but the prospect of getting to listen to their stories, and the extra cash, won out. Her first day, the first two calls went to voicemail. On her third attempt, <strong>Gail Standish \u201955<\/strong> answered the phone.<\/p>\n<p>The conversation flowed. Elicker is a Jos\u00e9 and Kimberly Bowen Dorsey Scholar, and Standish had donated in Rhoda Dorsey\u2019s name several times before. (\u201cGod love Rhoda Dorsey, I adored the ground she walked on,\u201d Standish explains.) When Elicker mentioned her interest in environmental science, Standish immediately offered to connect her to her son-in-law, who runs a large environmental engineering firm called TRC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s a very quirky, fun person to talk to,\u201d Elicker says. \u201cShe has these one-liners you won\u2019t expect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elicker shared her love of soccer, and Standish told her all about her grandson, Joshua, and his soccer scholarship. \u201cShe was very proud of him,\u201d says Elicker. \u201cI swear she might have been trying to set us up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone in the United States knows about my Joshua,\u201d says Standish. \u201cI like to talk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elicker had a big impact on Standish, as well. \u201cKat is the future of Goucher. She\u2019s positive, she\u2019s ambitious. I was very impressed with her.\u201d By the end of the call, Standish had pledged $25. But after some thought, she called back to double it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKat understood my pride in the fact that I graduated from a college like Goucher,\u201d says Standish. \u201cI felt like she really cared about what I had to say.\u201d After the call, Elicker wrote a thank you note to Standish, who responded in kind. The two are now pen pals\u2014Elicker has named the letters she receives \u201cGail Mail\u201d\u2014and they plan to keep sharing their Goucher experiences.<\/p>\n<p>Like the time Standish went on a Goucher trip to Cuba in the summer of 1953, just as the first uprising began. \u201cMy mother was ready to call in the United States Navy,\u201d Standish says. \u201cMy dad was a good friend of then-Senator Prescott Bush. He had to tell my mother, \u2018You can\u2019t ask a senator to send a navy ship to get your daughter.\u2019 And we were totally safe, by the way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Elicker is heading to New Zealand this fall and still working the Phone-a-thon in the meantime.
