Goucher’s Office of International Studies is holding a series of lectures, forums, and events focused on globalized education and future leaders to celebrate International Education Week, a joint initiative of the U.S. departments of State and Education.

“Gender Equality in South Africa: A Look Back on 20 Years”
Commissioner for Gender Equality for the Republic of South Africa Janine Hicks will present an overview of strides taken in the country to ensure the promotion, protection, and attainment of gender equality, as part of the country’s democratic and racial transformation.  The presentation will engage with current tensions between constitutional gender equality guarantees, and the values, perceptions and behaviors manifested in South African communities, and the work in addressing these.

Moderators Flo Martin, professor of French, and Zahi Khamis, instructor of Arabic, host the session on short term study abroad and the Nazareth Intensive Course Abroad.

“Favelas at the Vanguard”
Catalytic Communities founder Theresa Williamson has become an outspoken and respected advocate and informant on behalf of Rio de Janeiro’s favelas in the face of current fast-paced transformations. In this talk she looks at favela qualities and assets from a sustainability orientation and what is happening in Rio’s favelas today. Williamson is also Editor-in-Chief of RioOnWatch, CatComm’s internationally recognized favela news service. In May 2004 Theresa received her Ph.D from the Department of City and Regional Planning at the University of Pennsylvania.
