Eco Events This Fall at Goucher

Goucher College continues to demonstrate its support of environmental sustainability with this series of educational and co-curricular activities during the Fall 2012 semester:


Sustainability Dinner

The Goucher Environmental Sustainability Advisory Council (GESAC) is hosting a dinner that showcases local, sustainable food during Fall Orientation for first-year students.

 

Fish to Fork Eat Local Challenge
Tuesday, September 25
Dining halls, lunchtime

Bon Appétit, Goucher’s food services provider, is featuring meals prepared almost entirely from ingredients within a 150-mile radius of campus, focusing on sustainably harvested fish and seafood.


Permaculture Design

Friday, September 28, and Saturday, September 29
Various locations and times

Will Hooker, professor of horticulture science at North Carolina State University, will facilitate a workshop on permaculture design solely for members of the Goucher community. Permaculture draws from ecological design and engineering to minimize waste, human labor, and energy expenditures by building systems with maximal benefits and sustainability. Visiting Mellon Scholar: Dr. Eugenie Birch

Buchner Hall, Alumnae/i House, 5 p.m.

Dr. Eugenie Birch, the Nussdorf Professor of Urban Research at the University of Pennsylvania, will give a talk titled “The Century of the City: Issues in Urban Sustainability.” This talk is free and open to the public and does not require tickets.


Symphony of the Soil
Wednesday, October 17
Kelley Lecture Hall, 7:30 p.m.

Documentary director and producer Deborah Koons Garcia presents Symphony of the Soil, a film that examines humans’ relationship with soil, its use and misuse, and the latest scientific research on soil’s key role in today’s most challenging environmental issues. A talk and reception will follow the screening.
Visiting Mellon Scholar: Dr. Eileen McGurty
Monday, October 29
Van Meter Room B10, 7 p.m.

Dr. Eileen McGurty, program director of the Environmental Sciences and Policy Program at the Johns Hopkins University, will give a talk titled “Creating Sustainable Communities and Environmental Justice.” This talk is free and open to the public and does not require tickets.
