Goucher Featured in the Princeton Review’s ‘The Best 377 Colleges’

Goucher College once again has been included in The Princeton Review’s annual college guide, The Best 377 Colleges. Additionally, Goucher was No. 2 on the guide’s 2013 list of schools with the “Most Popular Study Abroad Program,” and it was noted for being one of the best colleges in the Northeastern United States. Goucher also was among just 21 colleges and universities that made the 2013 Green Honor Roll for its environmentally related practices, policies, and academic offerings.

Only about 15 percent of America’s 2,500 four-year colleges and three colleges outside the United States are profiled in the guide. The Princeton Review does not rank the colleges in the book academically or numerically in any category. Instead, it includes ranking lists of “top 20” colleges in various categories. The lists are entirely based on The Princeton Review’s survey of 122,000 students (about 324 per campus on average) attending the colleges in the book.

Goucher students surveyed for the book say the college is located on a “beautiful campus right outside a major city.” It is a “very creative place,” where assignments focus on “challenging [students] to make [their] own opinions on a topic and testing them.” Others who were surveyed said the typical Goucher student is “socially, politically, emotionally, and internationally aware” and that Goucher is “a place where one feels comfortable to talk to anyone, even the president of the college.”

The Princeton Review also tallies ratings based on institutional data collected from the schools during the 2011-12 academic year and/or the student survey for the book. These ratings are scores on a scale of 60 to 99, and they appear in each school profile in eight categories, including: Academics; Admissions Selectivity; Financial Aid; Fire Safety; and Green Rating, for which Goucher scored a 99. The Princeton Review explains the basis for each rating score in the book and at www.princetonreview.com/college/college-ratings.aspx.
