Goucher Honors Athletics Hall of Fame 2013 Inductees

Goucher College is honoring the fourth class of inductees into its Athletics Hall of Fame, which recognizes, honors, and perpetuates the memory of those individuals who have made outstanding contributions to Goucher College athletics and its intercollegiate athletics program.

The induction ceremony will be held Friday, April 26, at 6 p.m. in the Decker Sports and Recreation Center. The event will be part of Goucher’s Alumnae/i Weekend, which will be held April 26-28.

At the induction, Goucher will honorthe accomplishments of Eline von Borries, Katharine Perry DeLorenzo ’90, Kristin Carey Schulze ’98, and Stephanie LaGue Bentley ’05.

As chair of the Physical Education Department for 42 years, Eline von Borries introduced individual sports and modern dance to Goucher. A physical education professor at the college from 1921 until 1963, she also taught recreation courses and served as a camp counselor—and for several years she did so without the convenience of on-campus athletics facilities. From 1947 to 1954, the department had to make do with the gyms and pools of local schools and colleges, as well as nearby bowling alleys and skating rinks. Von Borries worked tirelessly with the Faculty Planning Committee to design a home for physical education on Goucher’s campus. She died at age 85 on August 10, 1978, at her home in Miami.

Katharine Perry DeLorenzo was the first player in the history of Goucher’s field hockey program to score 25 goals during her career. She likely would have scored even more during her four seasons if she had not also put in time as the Gophers’ goalkeeper, racking up a .866 save percentage. She also competed in lacrosse and swimming, and was named the lacrosse team’s Most Valuable Player in 1987 and 1988. DeLorenzo has enjoyed even greater success as head field hockey coach for Middlebury College, guiding her teams to four NCAA Division III championship game appearances. In 2003, DeLorenzo earned the first of two New England Coach of the Year awards, as well as Division III National Coach of the Year honors. In 2012, she led the team to a perfect 17-0 record en route to its second NESCAC championship and was named New England Small College Athletic Conference Coach of the Year.

In her first year onGoucher’s women’s lacrosse team, Kristin Carey Schulze ranked second in goals (66) and points (84). The following year, she was also second, with 77 goals and 26 assists, for 103 points. During her final two seasons, she became the team’s leading scorer. In her junior year, she accumulated 65 goals and was the Division III national leader in assists (34) and points (99); in her senior year, her 43 goals and 31 assists totaled 74 points. Schulze remains Goucher’s all-time leader in goals (251) and points (360) and ranks second in career assists (109). She also was a four-year letter winner in women’s soccer at Goucher. Her record still stands as the women’s soccer program’s all-time leader with 37 assists, and her 69 career points rank fifth in college athletics history.

When Stephanie LaGue Bentley represented Goucher at the 2005 NCAA Division III Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships she placed 34th overall in the 200-yard individual medley and finished in 20th place in the 200-yard backstroke. What made Bentley’s trip to nationals especially memorable is that despite being seeded ninth in the 100-yard backstroke, she completed the event in 58.87 seconds, good for sixth place, making her Goucher’s first Division III All-American in women’s swimming in 13 years. Bentley was nominated as the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Women’s Swimmer of the Year in 2002-03 and 2004-05 and was her sport’s Rookie of the Year in the CAC in 2001-02. She still holds school records in both backstroke events and the 200 individual medley, and she is one of 10 people who have had their jerseys—or in her case, her swimming suit and cap—retired by Goucher’s Athletics Department.

A permanent display of the Hall of Fame inductees is located in the lobby of Goucher’s Decker Sports & Recreation Center.

To be inducted into the Goucher College Athletics Hall of Fame, an individual must have participated in at least two full seasons of intercollegiate competition, been in good academic standing, graduated at least 10 years prior to the nomination date, and been a “truly distinguished performer in his/her sport.” Coaches, trainers, managers, administrators, and others who have made outstanding contributions or offered extraordinary service to athletics at Goucher are also eligible.
