Arsht Presidential Diplomats

Over 20 students—both undergraduate and graduate—now participate in the Arsht Presidential Diplomats Program through the Roxana Cannon Arsht ’35 Center for Ethics and Leadership.

Supported with funding from the Roxana Cannon Arsht ’35 Center for Ethics and Leadership and additional philanthropic dollars, Goucher College launched the inaugural cohort of the Arsht Presidential Diplomats during the 2021-22 academic year.

Consisting of nine student leaders from various areas of study, backgrounds, and locations, the diplomats participated in workshops led by alumni leaders, training about ethical leadership, and meetings with Goucher College stakeholders—from trustees to members of the Executive Committee.

Diplomats not only learned about the importance of philanthropy at institutions of higher education through their discourse but were also active participants in conversations about funding opportunities. Alongside President Kent Devereaux and Director of Corporate, Foundation, and Government Relations Andrea Marsh, two diplomats—Reese Finnigan, Class of 2025, and Cordelia Edwards, Class of 2024—met with U.S. senators Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen to discuss Goucher College’s top priorities and address three congressionally directed funding requests the college had submitted to their offices.

Additionally, Arsht Diplomats had the opportunity to network with U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona via Zoom and hear from Maryland Governor Larry Hogan during the first Leadership Café.

The Arsht Presidential Diplomats program is led by Lana Oweidat, Ph.D., the Roxana Cannon Arsht ’35 Professor of Ethics and Leadership; Lindsay Johnson, M.Ed., the France-Merrick Director of Community-Based Learning; and Kate Carnell, Ph.D., Assistant Vice President for Student Engagement.

Philanthropic dollars help support programmatic development and staffing, speaking engagements, and travel expenses for students. The Arsht Presidential Diplomat program celebrated the graduation of three diplomats and will welcome 14 new students for the 2022-23 academic year.
