{"id":349,"date":"2020-07-28T11:30:24","date_gmt":"2020-07-28T15:30:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.goucher.edu\/book-arts-baltimore\/?p=349"},"modified":"2021-10-18T11:35:47","modified_gmt":"2021-10-18T15:35:47","slug":"jesse-l-cassard-jr-a-found-silver-watch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.goucher.edu\/book-arts-baltimore\/jesse-l-cassard-jr-a-found-silver-watch\/","title":{"rendered":"Jesse L Cassard Jr., a found silver watch, Another Brownie Book (1890), the Star Spangled Banner, and Sara Provan\u2019s post-1946 Brownie camera"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While processing a sequence of C19-20 children\u2019s books for Special Collections,we happened upon a copy of Palmer Cox\u2019s second opus in the wildly popular\u00a0\u201cBrownie\u201d series, appropriately named\u00a0\u201cAnother Brownie Book\u201d (NY: Century, 1890). <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This one, of the thousands sold, contains a touching gift inscription:\u00a0\u201cMrs. Howland gave Jesse this book for finding her silver watch on October 19, 1888.\u201d\u00a0 The flyleaf inscription is in the hand of the\u00a0\u201cdonee,\u201d Jesse L. Cassard Jr. (1882-1946), then about six years old.\u00a0 Jesse\u2019s manuscript hand was an amazingly controlled Palmer Method cursive, reproduced again on another flyleaf:\u00a0\u201cJesse L. Cassard 1026 St. Paul St. March 29, 1889 | from Mrs. W. G. Howland 1319 N.
