The Soper Room

The Soper Room is the resource room for the Kratz Center for Creative Writing and Goucher’s Creative Writing Program. It is located in the Soper Room within the Julia Rogers building with a space dedicated to creative writers on Goucher College’s campus. The Soper Room contains books, materials, archives, and memorabilia pertaining to the artistry and professionalism of creative writing.

So too does the room contain the Book Nook, an area specially devoted to bookmaking and book art materials, and a rich sampling of the published books by Goucher’s first rate creative writing faculty, Madison Smartt Bell and Elizabeth Spires.

Generally, the Soper Room’s collection includes books published by the authors who have come to the college as Fall Visiting Authors, Spring Writers-in-Residence, or guest artists at master classes, special events, or symposia. It also includes trade publications, literary magazines, and the book art collections of homegrown Baltimore publishing houses like Furniture Press. The collection also includes key titles within the burgeoning field of Creative Writing Studies.

The Soper Room collection does not circulate. Students and community members are free to peruse the collection as they reflect and relax amongst the couches and chairs of the Soper Room. The Soper Room maintains an open door policy.
