Goucher Repertory Dance Ensemble Presents ‘Voices and Visions’

The Goucher Repertory Dance Ensemble Spring Concert highlights the exciting work of Goucher students, faculty, and guest artists. The concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 17, and Saturday, April 18, with an additional matinée at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The artists will discuss the choreography on Friday at 6:45 p.m. in Merrick Hall. All performances will take place in Kraushaar Auditorium and are open to the public.

Tickets are $15 general admission and $5 for students, senior citizens, and Goucher ID cardholders. Reservations can be made in advance at www.goucher.edu/tickets or by calling 410-337-6333.

Guest artist Gwen Welliver, a sought-after teacher and choreographer formerly with Doug Varone and Dancers, will present “Constellation Garden,” an original work created in collaboration with Goucher dancers. The work features an original score by Welliver’s longtime collaborator, composer Jake Meginsky.

The concert will also feature “Torrid Zone,” choreographed by award-winning choreographer and guest artist Diane Coburn Bruning to music by Gabriela y Rodrigo. This contemporary ballet was staged for the Goucher Repertory Dance Ensemble during Bruning’s recent residency.

“Out of Hand,” by Cami Padilla ’15, physicalizes internal conflict and the struggle of making difficult choices. The athletic movement illustrates the power that can emerge from adversity.

“Dissonance,” by Geneva Winters ’15, explores the discomfort associated with being confronted by information that conflicts with personal beliefs or values. Searching for a way to decrease that discomfort and find internal consistency is an overarching theme of the piece.

Rick Southerland, assistant professor of dance, will premiere a work created in collaboration with his cast of five dancers.

“With Grace,” choreographed by Goucher dance instructor Linda Garofalo, is a multimedia work that takes the audience on a journey from despair to grace through the use of live action and visual installation. This work, presented at the fall 2014 Goucher Repertory Ensemble concert and selected for performance at the American College Dance Association Mid-Atlantic Conference, was created in collaboration with Cuong Huy Nguyen ’14, a Goucher M.F.A. candidate in digital arts.
