Phoebe Yeoh ’15 Awarded NSF Research Fellowship

Phoebe Yeoh ’15, currently a PhD candidate at Carnegie Mellon University, has been awarded a 2016 Graduate Research Fellowship from the National Science Foundation.

Yeoh is one of 2,000 researchers, chosen from more than 17,000 applicants, to receive the fellowship. The program provides a $34,000 annual stipend and $12,000 cost-of-education allowance to support graduate students in science and engineering. Yeoh’s research is in materials science, specifically resistive switching materials. In a Goucher Magazine Q&A last year, she explained that, “These materials can be used to create memory and storage for faster, more powerful computers, and are of great interest to companies like Intel and Micron.”

Yeoh has been studying at Carnegie Mellon since graduating from Goucher with a Physics major last year. While here, she was co-president of the Goucher Physics club, which was named an outstanding chapter of the Society of Physics Students for their achievements, which included winning a research award to design and construct a cloud chamber.
