Goucher Equestrian Team Wins Winter Classic II Tournament of Champions

The Goucher Equestrian Team won first place at the Winter Classic II last weekend. Eight students rode in the competition, which was held Saturday, January 30 at Stonegate Farm in Cooleville, Ohio.

“At these tournaments, you can’t win unless every single person on the team does really well; every person needs to pull their weight completely,” said Jen Bunty, head coach and director of the equestrian program. “That makes this win really cool.”

The win represents the second time that the team, coached by Bunty and Brittany Martin, assistant director of the program, has received first place in a series event: The Gophers also took top honors last year at the Tournament of Champions Preseason Classic, which was held on Goucher’s campus.

The Tournament of Champions is particularly competitive because each team needs to be top in its region and must be invited to the competition. “It’s sort of like a mini-nationals,” Bunty said.

Other participants at the event included reigning National Champion Team Savannah College of Art and Design, Ohio State University, Pennsylvania State University, Mount Holyoke College, Virginia Polytechnic Institute, State University, and Emory & Henry College. The Goucher team’s next engagement is a regular IHSA horse show scheduled for Saturday, February 13, in in Gaithersburg, MD.
