Goucher College Awarded Mellon Foundation Grant

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has given Goucher College a $100,000 grant to support presidential leadership over the next three years.

The grant focuses on supporting institutional reform that has an impact beyond specific programs. Goucher will use the funds to support projects that add high-impact practices to our first-year programs and provide more support for student growth.

“I’m grateful for the foundation’s trust in our efforts to make completing higher education an opportunity for all students,” said Goucher President José Antonio Bowen. “I’m excited for these generous funds, which will help us improve our structure from within, so we not only can be thought-leaders, but so we can also enact real changes that will help all students succeed.”

Starting this year, Goucher will use the grant to reimagine the first-year of college in light of new research on the cognitive science of how students learn, as well as developing their critical, analytical, and creative capacities through the use of digital technologies, including blended learning or “teaching naked.”

Through its program in Higher Education and Scholarship in the Humanities, the Mellon Foundation helps colleges, universities, and research institutes respond to the economic, demographic, financial, and technological challenges affecting higher education by supporting initiatives designed to enhance the learning experience of both undergraduate and graduate students in the humanities.
