Demarre McGill, the principal flute in the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, will be the featured performer at Goucher College’s 2014 Annual Janet and Avery Fisher Music Residency Concert on Monday, November 10, at 8 p.m. in Merrick Lecture Hall.

On Sunday, November 9, McGill also will present a lecture/demonstration at 7 p.m. and a master class at 7:45 p.m. The public is invited to observe both events, which are free and will be held in Merrick Lecture Hall.
McGill—recipient of a 2003 Avery Fisher Career Grant—has performed with the symphony orchestras of Baltimore, Milwaukee, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, San Diego, and Seattle, among others. In May 2012 he and his brother, Anthony, performed the world premiere of Joel Puckett’s Concerto Duo for Flute and Clarinet with the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra, the orchestra where they began their careers.
An active chamber musician, McGill has been featured on a PBS Live From Lincoln Center broadcast with the Chamber Music Society performing Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 2, as well as on an Angel Records CD playing Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 with pianist Awadagin Pratt and the St. Lawrence String Quartet.
A featured performer on numerous broadcasts and recordings, McGill has performed on a PBS Live From Lincoln Center broadcast with the Chamber Music Society playing Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 2. He has recorded Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 with pianist Awadagin Pratt and the St. Lawrence String Quartet on the Angel Records Label, as well as a flute, viola, and harp album titled The Eye of Night with the Myriad Trio, which he founded. His television appearances include the A&E network series The Gifted Ones, NBC’s Today show and Nightly News, and as a teenager, he appeared on PBS’s Mister Roger’s Neighborhood.
McGill has participated in the Music from Angel Fire, Santa Fe, Kingston, Cape Cod, Charlottesville, Music@Menlo, and Bay Chamber concerts, as well as the Mainly Mozart, La Jolla, and Marlboro music festivals. International festival appearances include the Stellenbosch Chamber Music Festival in South Africa, St. Bart’s Music Festival in the Caribbean, and the Jeju International Wind Ensemble Festival in South Korea.
McGill came to the Dallas Symphony after being Principal Flutist of the Seattle Symphony since 2011. He has held the same position with the San Diego Symphony, the Florida Orchestra, and the Santa Fe Opera Orchestra. He also served as acting principal flutist of the Pittsburgh Symphony during the 2005-06 season.
Originally from Chicago, Illinois, McGill began playing the flute at the age of 7. He earned his bachelor’s degree in flute performance from the Curtis Institute of Music, where he studied with Julius Baker and Jeffrey Khaner. He continued his studies with Baker at the Juilliard School, where he received a master of music degree.
The Janet and Avery Fisher Music Residency is funded by the late Janet Fisher, a 1938 Goucher alumna, in memory of her late husband. This annual two-day residency offers music students the opportunity to interact with and learn from internationally known professional musicians. Past Fisher artists in residence have included Demarre’s brother Anthony McGill, Igor Begelman, and Shai Wosner.
