About the Position:

Our enthusiastic, well-trained Playworks coaches manage a safe and inclusive recess where children are inspired to get off the sidelines and into the game. They employ play and physical activity as tools for generating more community and family involvement through teaching and implementing conflict resolution strategies.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Program Duties (if applicable):

Planning and implementing sports and play based programming during recess, in school and after school hours at a public elementary school.

  • Recess – create a safe and inclusive playground yard and be a significant presence on the yard by organizing and playing large games with 20+ students as well as role modeling positive behavior
  • Junior Coach Program – organize a youth leadership program by facilitating trainings and working with teachers and staff
  • Class Game Time – lead individual classes in skills building, cooperative games, and activities to increase awareness of rules and boundaries at recess
  • After School Program – organize a homework/snack and a physical activity period for around 15 students focusing on building a community as well as reinforcing the
  • Playworks philosophy
  • Interscholastic leagues – recruit and coach students for developmental sports leagues.
  • This includes building a school community and coordinating volunteers
  • Administrative Duties:
  • Maintain communication between Playworks staff, school staff, teachers, families, and volunteers
  • Collect and maintain paperwork including organizing daily, weekly, and monthly schedules and timesheets
  • Collect and maintain paperwork and data for various grant requirements



  • Demonstrated experience leading groups of children with the ability to engage and inspire youth
  • Ability/Willingness to commit to completion of 1700 during the program year (40+ hours/week of service, including participating in occasional night and weekend service opportunities such as community service projects)
  • Motivated self-starter with clear and open communication skills
  • Humorous and playful with ability to set clear goals and follow through with flexible and creative problem solving tools
  • Conceptual ability for the larger perspective with a strong attention to detail and multitasking
  • Experience interacting with diverse communities and the ability to integrate into and existing school community
  • Knowledge of computer and internet based programs for use in communication and grant requirements
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, both oral and written

The Urban Teacher Center (UTC) is a four-year, alternative teacher preparation program that operates in the Baltimore/Washington, D.C. region.  Each cohort participates in an intensive year-long residency, followed by a three-year teaching commitment in a high-need urban elementary or middle school. UTC’s residents will be fully prepared to become highly competent teachers; in addition to the clinical experience, residents also enroll in a Master’s of Education program that is directly relevant to the urban teacher. All UTC teachers are part of an unprecedented commitment to student performance:  only those who can demonstrate that they can improve student learning will complete the program. Over time, our teachers will be among the most expert and results-oriented in the nation. Healthy Kids’ Day at the Y of Central Maryland

The Y of Central Maryland’s upcoming Healthy Kids’ Day is April 16th from 11am-2pm.  The Y of Central Maryland is an affiliate of the YMCA of the US. Healthy Kids’ Day is an annual event held across the country at various YMCA locations. The event is a day of activities and fun for all ages. Among the various crafts, games andhealthy snacks we would like to offer face painting. In previous years the Y of Central Maryland has offered free face painting at all their locations withgreat success we would like to continue this at our Parkville location.

We are looking for two volunteer’s to help with face painting and would greatly appreciate your help in passing along this message to anyone who would enjoy giving back to the community. Face painting materials will be provided. Allvolunteers may contact me from this email address or by phone.

–          Duties: arts & crafts (making bracelets), painting fingernails, face painters, monitors, refreshment servers, greeters, dance instructors, yoga instructors, Avon & Mary Kay representatives are invited to come do free sample sessions, volunteers are needed to assist in setting up and cleaning stations
