ROOTSFest 2011

ROOTSFest 2011 is a 5-day celebration of arts and culture, and an exploration of the ways by which art and culture may be used to foster healing, leadership and sustainability in our communities. ROOTSFest is put on as a collaborative effort between Alternate Roots, a re-gifting arts organization based in Atlanta, GA and CultureWorks, an arts group based in West Baltimore. This celebration of West Baltimore is based around the Highway to Nowhere — the project on Route 40 that displaced hundreds of families and created not an active freeway, but a failed, empty, and somewhat haunting strip dividing neighborhoods and communities. CultureWorks and Alternate Roots are seeking to create a new image/perception of this area as a blank, green slate (52 acres of green space along the Highway are under- (or utterly un-)used and will act as the stages to both performing artists and art installations) to serve as the foundation that may reawaken a community in disrepair.
ROOTSFest will take place from June 22-26, and will be an all-day (and most the night) affair. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday will host the National Learning Exchange, an opportunity for artists and community activists from all around the country to come together to discuss and explore the impact and possibilities of arts and culture on cities, neighborhoods and communities such as ours. The Learning Exchange will run from 10-4, starting with a keynote speaker and moving into breakout sessions. Late Night Cabarets will take place Thursday and Friday evening (10:30pm until…) at the LoFT in Station North and artists will be staying in MICA dorms for the entirety of the festival. Following the NLE on Wednesday and Thursday, ROOTSFest will be hosting performances (everything from dance to theatre to spoken word)… somewhere, hopefully in Station North. 
Needs!!!  We’re looking for people to 1) come and support the festival (Sat (10am-10pm) & Sun (10am-6pm). Outdoor Festivals are totally free and will have performances on 4 stages over the course of the weekend, as well as artist, community, health and vendor booths), 2) be part of the National Learning Exchange (fees for local folks are only $25/day, which is pretty great). This is an amazing experiential opportunity to open an absolutely essential conversation. In order to be effective, we need to hear from people from all walks of life. Please come! 3) if you’re interested, we need really good and interesting and motivating folks to help lead some break out rooms at the NLE and 4) this is where the majority of you come in: LOTS of volunteers. For everything.

2011 Summer Associate VISTA Program

For over 45 years, members of AmeriCorps*VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) have actively served low-income areas by mobilizing people, businesses and organizations with the goal of creating sustainable healthy communities.  Throughout the year, AmeriCorps*VISTA provides full-time members to nonprofit, faith-based and other community organizations, and public agencies to create and expand programs that bring low-income individuals and communities out of poverty.

 Overview of the Summer Associates Program

The VISTA program also has a Summer Associate component, a short-term service (June 12- August 13) opportunity during the summer months.  The Summer Associate program enhances an existing VISTA project by providing individuals that will participate for 8 weeks, alongside year-round AmeriCorps*VISTA members, in an intensive level of summer service.  During service, Summer Associates are available to the community on a full-time basis which is described by Congress as “24 hours a day, 7 days a week.”  This means that the Summer Associate should be available as deemed necessary by the sponsoring agency, for the project, without regard to standard working hours.

Available Positions in the Baltimore Area!

Margaret Brent Elementary/ Middle School- Assist with summertime activities in the Remington neighborhood and organize block projects

Barclay, Midway, and Old Goucher- Assist the Barclay Youth Safe Haven Coordinator with preparation for the coming year elementary school mentoring program and overall program structure

Waverly Community -Engage in neighborhood outreach around community association and block projects and provide support for summer programs or neighborhood youth  

Barclay Community- Organize neighborhood block projects in the Harwood Community and school including school beautification projects

GHCC Adult Literacy & ESOL- Develop a project-based learning model for the Adult Basic Education classroom to be piloted in the Fall 2011.

General Eligibility

  • Summer Associates must be at least 18 years of age at the time of placement
  • Be a U.S. Citizen, National or Legal Resident
  • Able to commit and serve on a full-time basis for 8 weeks
  • Not listed on the National Sex Offenders Public Registry

Benefits and Support

In addition to making a credible effort to help people and communities escape poverty, Summer Associates receive benefits and support during and after successful completion of summer service. Associates are eligible to receive:

  • A $1,132 Segal AmeriCorps Education Award or a $125/mo summer end-of service stipend
  • On-site orientation and training
  • A living allowance to cover necessities during service (approx. $2000 by the end of the summer)
  • Involvement in the AmeriCorps*VISTA Alumni Network and eCommunity

Volunteer Opportunity at Immaculate Conception Parish, Towson

Immaculate Conception Parish, Towson, Adult Faith Formation Ministry is in the process of developing our schedule of events for 2011-2012.  We need young volunteers to provide child care so that more parishioners can attend our presentations on weekday evenings, around 7 pm with a few possibly during the weekend. 

Volunteers are required to participate in a STAND training which the Catholic Archdiocese of Baltimore requires for all who work with young people.  One of our staff members will provide this training for all who choose to participate.

HEALTH FREEDOM WALK: A Path to Wellness 5K walk



 Baltimore County Volunteers (BCV) and the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), in partnership with the Baltimore County Health Department, are recruiting volunteers and participants for the HEALTH FREEDOM WALK: A Path to Wellness 5K walk.

By volunteering you may help with set-up, registration, greeting, mile markers, refreshments or clean-up. 

As a 5K walker this is your opportunity to promote health and fitness.  You will be honoring those who utilized the Underground Railroad to travel throughout Maryland on their flight to freedom, as well as those who made the Railroad possible.

The event will take place on Saturday, April 30, 2011 at the Hampton Mansion, 535 Hampton Lane, Towson 21286.

Goucher presents ‘King Gimp’ Dan Keplinger

Goucher College will hold a screening of The King of Arts, a documentary featuring Baltimore-born Dan Keplinger’s struggle with cerebral palsy and his work as an artist, on Monday, February 14, at 4 p.m. in the Pinkard Room of the Athenaeum. A Q&A session with Keplinger will follow the documentary.

This event is free and open to the public. To attend, please contact Santa Wallace at by Thursday, February 10.

During February, Goucher will also exhibit Keplinger’s work in the Lenrow Gallery outside the Pinkard Room in the Athenaeum.

Real Food Farm

Join us every 1st and 3rd Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at Real Food Farm, an urban farm in Clifton Park in northeast Baltimore (more info at Our volunteer projects vary every month from planting and weeding to building new hoophouses and a pavilion. Come enjoy hot coffee at the beginning and a potluck lunch at the end! If you’re staying for lunch, please bring a dish to share.
