Jeff Kunerth MFA ’10 and his colleagues David Breen, Stephen Hudak, and Denise-Marie Ordway at the Orlando (Fla.) Sentinel on April 15 were named finalists for the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for Local Reporting.

Jeff Kunerth MFA ’10

The four journalists were recognized for “their aggressive coverage of hazing rituals by the Florida A&M University marching band that killed a drum major and led to the resignation of the band leader and the university president,” according to the Pulitzer Prizes website.

A longtime reporter and writer, Kunerth is the author of Trout: A True Story of Murder, Teens, and the Death Penalty (University Press of Florida, 2012), which he began as a master’s project while at Goucher. In the nonfiction work, Kunerth explores how society views and judges juvenile criminals by detailing the chilling tale of three teenagers who are hired to kill a store clerk but murder the wrong man. Kunerth lives with his wife in Altamonte Springs, FL.

Earlier this month, Brian Mockenhaupt MFA ’11 received the 2013 Michael Kelly award in recognition of his story “The Living and the Dead,” in which he tells the story of three Marines, reporting upon their lives in Afghanistan—and their struggles when they return home.

Presented annually by Atlantic Media, publisher of Atlantic Monthly and the National Journal, the $25,000 award is given to a journalist whose work exemplifies “the fearless pursuit and expression of truth” that motivated the work of the late Michael Kelly, a former editor of the Atlantic and the National Journal who died while covering the war in Iraq, according to The Atlantic website.

A journalist and Iraq War veteran, Mockenhaupt spent 18 months reporting the article, which appears on Byliner.com. https://www.byliner.com/originals/the-living-and-the-dead.
